The quality of a product is marketed by showcasing a consumer's engagement with a product, via reviews. The quality of these reviews translates to the quality of the attention that consumers gave it. With the advent of the internet, maybe the business of reviewing itself has been democratized into mediocrity.

Every guy who watches a film that was out yesterday has an opinion on it, and most of these opinions have nothing intelligent or meaningful to say. There's no qualification to become a movie reviewer on YouTube or a shitposter on Twitter. Flooded by mediocre reviews and inarticulate opinions, the perception that everyone is a "low-attention consumer" is getting stronger. But maybe most people were like this always, and it's just that there's no gatekeeping now so the average attention-span is on display for everyone to lament about.
